# The city

Eight quarters, and each one has a reason to physically be there.

![The eight quarters](https://4260649310-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FKcsYQvCRvRMcCez33U9S%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-5f87b51ed8d6ef7ff23b5a99eb6972c0fb937aef%2Fthe-city.svg?alt=media)

A listed company is an address. A corner in freight means going down to the docks and looking at the ships.

| # | Quarter         | What it is                                                              |
| - | --------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| 0 | **THE FLOOR** | The exchange, the pit, the board the whole city reads |
| 1 | **THE STREET** | Brokerages — DUNMORE & CROSS among them — the diner, two hundred phones |
| 2 | **THE VAULT** | Banks, the clearing house, the desk that decides if you are good for it |
| 3 | **THE COURTS** | The regulator, the courthouse, the bar where both sides drink |
| 4 | **THE DOCKS** | Commodities, tank farms, the cargo that makes the paper worth something |
| 5 | **THE PARK** | Old money, private clubs, penthouses, deals that never touch a phone |
| 6 | **THE VILLAGE** | Retail clients, walk-ups, the university where you recruit juniors |
| 7 | **THE FIELD** | The airport, the hangars, the flight nobody announces |

## The exchange is the middle of the city, literally

Not one landmark among several. It fills the north face of the arrival plaza, twenty-two tiles wide, its steps on the plaza's own paving. The bull, the fountain and the ticker band across its facade all face it. The blocks that ring it are the financial core, so the walk out is a canyon of towers that falls away into brownstones, warehouses and piers.

### The floor itself

Inside are four walnut **trading posts**. A listing trades at one post and nowhere else. A **specialist** stands at each post's outer rail and makes markets in the two quarters it carries; walk up to him and THE TERMINAL opens on his book alone, already selected on his first name.

| Post                               | Quarters               | Specialist         |
| ---------------------------------- | ---------------------- | ------------------ |
| **ONE · THE STREET** | THE FLOOR, THE STREET | THE SPECIALIST |
| **TWO · MONEY AND CONSEQUENCE** | THE VAULT, THE COURTS | THE CLEARING CHIEF |
| **THREE · CARGO AND OLD MONEY** | THE DOCKS, THE PARK | THE HARBOURMASTER |
| **FOUR · THE PUBLIC AND THE EXIT** | THE VILLAGE, THE FIELD | THE DEAN |

Over the rostrum the **annunciator** reads the tape live — how many names are listed, the leader, the laggard — so the room can be read from the middle of it.

`T` is *show me the market*. A post is *show me yours*. Same orders, same server, same fills: the floor is a place, not a bonus.

## The quarter desks

Every outer quarter carries two desks on its arrival square, with that quarter's own piece of street furniture between them: the post that makes markets in its names — so you trade the quarter's book where the quarter is — and one service that is the quarter's own business.

| Quarter     | Its service          |
| ----------- | -------------------- |
| THE STREET  | Supplies             |
| THE VAULT | The block desk |
| THE COURTS  | The regulator's desk |
| THE DOCKS   | The chandler         |
| THE PARK | The members' desk |
| THE VILLAGE | The corner doctor |
| THE FIELD | The flight desk |

That, and the quarter's own building kit on its blocks, is what an outer quarter is for.

## Getting around

Traversal is earned, and it is part of the flex:

**walking → the subway** (fare, timetable) **→ your own car**, parked where people see it **→ a driver** who moves you while you keep trading **→ the helicopter** off the roof.

Every rung buys back the one thing the game will not sell you: time.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://reverie.gitbook.io/wall-usdstreet-on-rh/the-city.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
